Overview

This tour takes you to the Kanheri Caves, which are over 2000 years old and provide an exceptional opportunity to understand ascetic life in ancient India.

The Kanheri Caves in Mumbai date back to the 1st to 10th century BC. They are located deep within the Sanjay Gandhi National Park and offer an unusual and captivating insight into the Buddhism founded by Lord Buddha.

During the prosperous times of the Mauryan and Kushan Empires, the Kanheri Caves were a Buddhist college center of learning. Most of the caves are Buddhist viharas, where monks lived, studied, and meditated.

There are many reasons Kanheri Caves are listed as a place of interest on many tourist maps and guidebooks. The dining halls, dormitories, water cisterns, and the traditional and ancient approach to architecture give Kanheri Caves its particular charm.

The Kanheri Caves are undisturbed and tucked away in the verdant surroundings of the Sanjay Gandhi National Park.

The park covers 9000 hectares and is home to various species of birds and animals, including deers, four-horned antelopes, leopards, macaques, civets, mongooses, and languors.

The park becomes an oasis of green during the monsoon season and immediately thereafter.

Even today, in this modern era, you can feel the magnetic aura of this serene ancient place.

This tour is a personalized Mumbai tour with a native guide from the region, who will explain each cave thoroughly and answer any questions you may have during the visit.
